Daphne Matziaraki
Daphne Matziaraki is an award winning documentary filmmaker based in Berkeley, California. She was born and raised in Athens Greece. She directed, produced, photographed and edited award winning “4.1 Miles,” which in 2017 was nominated for an Academy Award® in the Documentary short category.
Over 21 minutes, Matziaraki captures the efforts of Papadopoulos, a Greek coastguard captain, as he and his small crew rescue men, women and children in the waters surrounding the island of Lesbos - just 4.1 miles from the Turkish coast - in late 2015.
"I had never seen so many people, so many children, so many families being so scared," said Daphne during an interview to Al Jazeera.
Daphne has lived and worked in Europe, Africa and the United States. Matziaraki has a Master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, as well as a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Bristol, UK. She is currently directing her new documentary film and she works as a cinematographer on other projects.
